16th Edition of Pravo Ljudski Film Festival to Open and Close With Posthumanist Films

We are excited to share more about the Opening and Closing films of PLJ16

The 16th edition of the Pravo Ljudski Film Festival will take place in a hybrid format, from 1 to 6 December (Meeting Point Cinema and Film Center Sarajevo), followed by the online availability of the films from 7 to 17 December through pravoljudski.org.

The 16th edition of the Pravo Ljudski Film Festival will kick off with Camille & Ulysse, which comes straight from its World Premiere at IDFA to Sarajevo. Directed by Diana Toucedo, featuring the philosophers Vinciane Despret and Donna Haraway the film was adapted from texts The Camille Stories and Autobiographie d’un poulpe.

Filmed like an oral tale and a correspondence between the two narrators and their stories, the film follows the ways of living and dying among communities on a damaged planet and their growing proficiency in a new field of scientific knowledge: terolinguistics, or the study of animal languages. The narrators, in harmony with their partners in symbiosis, become increasingly aware of the growth possibilities of the tentacular and metamorphic beings.

Diana Toucedo will be joining the audience in Sarajevo at the opening night of the festival!

The closing film of this year’s festival is a work by Austrian filmmaker Ralo Mayer that delineates "ecologies of contemporary history" linking past futures and present-day speculations. Mayer's film Extra-Terrestrial Ecologies (Retroflectors: the astronaut, the robot, the alien) deals with the oikos – with the house that is wanted, and therefore home, and haunted, and therefore not a home. In the absence of a foundational nature and in the presence of various post-human bodies – both more insistent than existent in their traces and remains –, we see oikos´ ecology turn into hauntecology. It's all a matter of being together; which begs the question: with whom?

Mayer´s witty essay, high on associations, traverses materials that look and feel like residues from a history of space ecology and experiments in biospheres: videos from laboratories, television snippets with news from the world of science, movie scenes sedimented in children´s consumer cultures; the latter feature massively. To these bodies that matter, quoted from sci-fi classics such as Blade Runner and E.T., something is supplemented, something equally categorical.
